Clitoria ternatea is also known as Butterfly Pea, Blue Pea, Aprajita, Kordofan Pea, Blue Tea Flowers or Asian pigeonwings. Butterfly pea flower tea, commonly known as blue tea, is a caffeine free herbal tea which is made from a decoction or infusion of the flower petals of the Clitoria Ternatea plant. This tea has traditional and ancient roots in the south east asian countries with mentions in the Ayurvedic Medicinal Study stating that it has the quality of enhancing memory, nootropic , antistress , anxiolytic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant properties. The tea has a distinctive deep blue color of the petals and It has a floral, mildly sweet flavor, somewhat similar to that of chamomile. Its extracts possess a wide range of pharmacological activities including antimicrobial, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, diuretic, local anesthetic, antidiabetic, insecticidal, blood platelet aggregation-inhibiting and for use as a vascular smooth muscle relaxing properties. This plant has a long use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for several diseases and scientific studies have reconfirmed those with modern relevance.
